La Cruz de Huanacaxtle

Known as “La Cruz” to the locals, La
Cruz de Huanacaxtle may have gotten it’s name after the body of
a indigenous woman was buried at the base of a giant Huanacaxtle tree.
In tribute a large cross, 2 meters by 1 meter, was carved into the trunk
of the tree. The name stuck when people began to say “lets meet
at the cross (cruz) of huanacaxtle.

La Cruz’s snug harbor is also the seasonal anchorage
of yachts from all over the world. The village of La Cruz is a safe and
relaxing place. Enjoy a traditional, open air Mexican market every Wednesday
morning or step across the street to where the fisherman repair their
nets in the shade of the huge Huanacaxtle trees and make your best deal
on this mornings catch.
Perhaps an evening relaxing in the charming courtyard
restaurant Black Forest or enjoy live music under the palapa at Philo’s
Bar. Village stores are small but have pretty much anything you need and
you can’t beat the friendly hospitality of small town folks, no
matter what the country.

If strolling the beaches hand in hand is what you have
in mind there are over 26 miles of spectacular beaches in the area. If
you are ready for a faster pace,
Puerto Vallarta is only minutes away by car, taxi, or
bus via a brand new 4 lane highway. World class shopping centers, tourist
malls and markets, clubs and the hustle and bustle of a large tourist
destination await you.
This gated property is located “downtown”
on the plaza, next to the church. The ocean waters across the street and
thru the trees rarely dip below 74°F even during the winter. The sea
life is abundant. The Gray Whales use the bay as their birthing grounds
in January, February and March.
The high season runs from late October through May, though,
as the area grows in popularity, the season is getting longer. La Cruz
offers a tranquil and more truly Mexican experience than Puerto Vallarta
but benefits from the city's closeness. Puerto Vallarta's airport makes
visiting La Cruz a short flight from most cities.

Relaxing is the most popular sport for vacationers visiting
La Cruz. For those who have energy to burn there are horses for rides
along the beach or through the jungle, snorkeling or diving expeditions
to the nearby, famous Marieta Islands, kayak rentals and tours, jungle
hikes and mountain bike excursions, surfing, a golf-course 10 minutes
away, a go-cart track and, of course, fishing.
La Cruz is very safe and small enough that there are
no strangers. It is common for locals and visitors to interact and become
friendly - even language is hardly a barrier.
Most everyone who has stayed in the bungalows has or is planning to return - if you would like to see some of the letters from our past guests please click here.
